I started letterboxing on Mother's Day, 2002 and had gotten 2 boxes alone. I
urged my husband and 16 year old (rolling their eyes all the way) to join me
on my 3rd find. With the compass, cryptic clues and the fact that this actually
got me, an indoor type, OUTdoors, my hubby (Old Blue) was hooked. In fact,
his clues and carvings are better than mine now! This is part of what makes a
marriage last 30 years. . .and counting!

(Still working on getting the now 18 year old to 'box. . .)

Seems to me that if a husband knew there were plenty of men who would
love a companionable woman to go letterboxing with, that might be
just the push they need...

I also used the "blackberries might be ripe" to get him to come
along, and now he's happy to come with (tho not hooked)-even when the
berries aren't ripe!

If the compass doesn't work for motivation, you could always try a GPS receiver....

Got one of those myself. There is a maximum box per day limit that she reaches when we are on vacation. She doesn't mind if it is a wham-bam find but if it takes any time to find at all, well....

She tolerates my hobbies but doesn't necessarily relish them.

Ok
Thats it . I think I just came up with a job for my
self. ( I am looking Right Now ). I can be a Letterbox
escort. I could escort nice ladys in the woods for a
very small fee. So then thier husbands would get
jealus and go with them for free. Hmmm what about Mary
comes along too. Safty in numbers.

I don't have a husband who will get jealous though! LOL But, thanks for the
offer Paul! I could use an escort to perhaps get the box next to the bobcat
(?) den in Penwood!.....

I'm grateful to my husband for watching the kids so I can go out
boxing. I like to go with the whole family, but the kids don't want
to spend every waking minute boxing. Go figure?

My husband's not nearly as excited as I am about letterboxing, but he likes
hiking in the woods, and I keep telling him, if we're going to hike in the
woods, we might as well be hiking on a trail with a letterbox as not! Also, he
likes that he's the one who can often find a box after I've given up. I keep
telling him he HAS to come with me just for that reason.

Of course, when we saw bears for the very first time, and it happened on a
trail we'd never have taken if there hadn't been a letterbox there, that was a
good selling point, too!

I am not sure what others feel, that much is obvious, but one would
hope that loving one's wife is not, as Darlene put it (an) "onorous
responsibilit(y)."

And I would also hope that we remember gun safety on the letterboxing
trail, especially when alcohol is involved.

Just a small thought or two,
Sir B

Don't forget the 2nd most important after loving their wives-Making little letterboxers so they don't have to go with their wives anymore!

should be practiced on the trail or off the trail.

It's not the bears that freak me out. Those dang hungry cougars
you'll have in Calif. have a way of making me think "Is this box
worth it?". Even tough guy, Silver Fox, weighs the issue and becomes
reluctant.

I believe they caught or killed the mountain lion that was marauding in Orange County. This was the one that was generating all of the news. I believe that in almost all of the cases of attacks, the people were attacked around dusk, not the best time to be looking for a box anyway since the light is fading.

A secondary factor is that all of those who were attacked were exhibiting prey like behavior. They were joggers and bike riders who were moving rapidly away from the lion as if fleeing from it. I haven't heard of any hikers being attacked.

I would think that wearing a backpark and carrying a walking stick would make a person look too big and formiddable for a mountain lion to attack.

For my birthday, my mom & dad gave me a new hiking staff with a
